Itinerary

Day 1: Winnipeg, Manitoba

Reservations have been confirmed for you at the Four Points by Sheraton, which is just across from the Winnipeg airport. This evening you will meet your guide and other tour participants. You’ll have an opportunity to ask last minute questions as well as learn more of the details for your departure.

Day 2: Winnipeg/Explore Churchill

You’ll fly by private, chartered plane early this morning to the polar bear capital of the world – Churchill! (The flight is about two and a half hours.) Upon arrival, we will immediately depart for a tour of the historic town and the surrounding area. Its location, on the northwest shore of Hudson Bay, in northern Manitoba and at the mouth of the Churchill River (where marine, tundra and taiga ecosystems converge,) makes Churchill a world-class natural phenomenon.

Beluga whales, migratory birds, and wildflowers draw visitors to Churchill during the summer, but it is the polar bears that congregate along these rocky shores that draw thousands of visitors each fall.

After lunch, we’ll visit the Parks Canada Museum. The visitor center offers a variety of programs and exhibits which highlight Wapusk National Park, the Prince of Wales Fort and York Factory National Historic Sites. Walk back in time as you view and learn about the history of Churchill through detailed wildlife dioramas and fur trade exhibits.

Day 3: A Day on the Tundra

You’ll spend the full day on the tundra observing polar bears and other Arctic wildlife from the warmth and comfort of our authentic Tundra Buggy. Specifically designed for the northern landscape, these all-terrain vehicles enable us to take you to the best locations in the Churchill area to safely experience wildlife.

Venturing on a network of established trails in the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, the Tundra Buggy takes our guests to the heart of polar bear country where bears and other Arctic wildlife call home. Our exclusive permits allow us to venture along 20 miles of established trails within this protected area.

Our professional guides (and our drivers) know this area well. We may see a mother with her cubs digging in the kelp (bear butts!), young adult males play-fighting, or a lone male lumbering across the tundra, backlit by the warm glow of a Manitoba sunset.

Lunch and morning and afternoon snacks will be served.

This evening we will have a presentation by a local resident who will share his culture, history and way of life in the north.

Day 4: Explore Churchill and Its Northern Culture

Churchill is not just a wildlife meca. It is also steeped in history. Archaeology in the area shows evidence of human presence dating back 4,000 years.

This morning we’ll visit the Itsanitaq Museum. The Itsanitaq Museum has a collection of Inuit carvings and artifacts that are among the finest and oldest in the world, dating from Pre-Dorset (1700 B.C.) through Dorset, Thule and modern Inuit times. (This is also one of our favorite places for purchasing beautiful, Innuit artwork.)
This afternoon, life is going to the dogs! We’ll visit a local musher and meet his friendly and lively team of sled dogs. He’ll first explain the care and keeping of sled dogs. Afterward, he will introduce us to the “pack” and we will have the opportunity to hop in either a dogsled or dogcart (depending upon the ground conditions) for a ride through the boreal forest.

Today there will also be free time to explore Churchill on your own. One additional option is taking a one-hour helicopter tour (weather permitting.) A helicopter flight provides a different perspective of the tundra’s vast expanse. From above, you’ll appreciate its rugged beauty. You may also track migrating caribou, Arctic fox and of course, polar bears!

Day 5: A Second Day on the Tundra/Return to Winnipeg

Once again, you’ll enjoy a second full day on the tundra. In addition to polar bears, our professional guide will help us keep a close eye out for Arctic Fox and Arctic Hare. They are not easy to spot as their brown coats, in the early part of the season, allows them to blend in with the low brush. Then, later into the season, their coats turn to a winter-white, offering excellent camouflage against the frozen white ground.

After our full day on the tundra, we will be transferred back to the Churchill airport for our return flight to Winnipeg. Reservations are again confirmed at the Four Points by Sheraton.

Day 6: Depart Winnipeg

You may depart Winnipeg at your leisure.

Why Churchill Canada?

For our guests who would like to see as much as possible during their visit to Manitoba, we recommend staying an extra day or two in Winnipeg.

For thousands of years, the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers has been a meeting place central to the fur trade, the railway, and the grain exchange. Today, Manitoba’s capital city is the largest city on the Canadian Prairies and now known for its aerospace, technology and creative industries, among others.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Trip Timing and Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

  • When is the best time to visit Churchill for polar bear viewing?
  • The prime time to experience polar bear viewing in Churchill is from mid-October to mid-November. During this time, polar bears gather near the shorelines as they wait for the sea ice to form, making it an ideal time for observation. Our tours are scheduled around prime polar bear viewing.

  • Is there a chance to see the Northern Lights during the tour?
  • Churchill is famous for its dark, clear skies, which are perfect for observing the aurora borealis. While the peak season for the Northern Lights is between September and March, our polar bear tours in October and November offer a chance to catch this spectacular display if the conditions are right.

  • What other animals will we see?
  • Apart from polar bears, Churchill is home to a range of Arctic wildlife. Guests may spot red and arctic foxes, arctic hares, moose, wolverines, wolves, collared lemmings, snowy owls, common ravens, grey jays, gyrfalcons, willow and rock ptarmigans, snow buntings, and short-eared owls.

Please call us for details.)Please schedule your arrival into Winnipeg on the first day (or earlier) of your scheduled tour. You may depart anytime on the last day of your itinerary. • Yes! For groups of 10 or more, we offer custom itineraries that allow you to tailor activities and accommodations to your preferences. Customized options may include special meeting places, unique accommodations, and additional catering.

Tour Suitability, Physical Requirements and Comfort

  • What are the physical requirements?
  • Our polar bear tours require minimal physical exertion. The Tundra Buggies enable you to explore safely from an elevated perspective, though guests need to be able to climb up and down stairs. Weather conditions can vary, so be prepared for below-freezing temperatures and potentially slippery surfaces.

  • Are the tours appropriate for families with children? Is there a minimum age for the polar bear tour?
  • Absolutely! In fact, for children 12 and under, we have a special, family-friendly itinerary with emphasis on activities the whole family will enjoy. More information on this itinerary can be found in the Itinerary section of this document.
That said, we do not encourage very young children on our regular tours as the days are quite long (8 hours or more on the Tundra Buggy).
If you have children and you’re not sure which adventures are appropriate, give us a call.

  • Will there be bathroom facilities available during the Tundra Buggy excursions?
  • Yes, for your comfort, there is a “flush” style toilet, similar to what you may find in an RV.

Safety and Wildlife Viewing

  • How safe is it to be in close proximity to polar bears?
  • Safety is our highest priority. The Tundra Buggies are elevated and designed to keep guests safely distanced while providing excellent views of the polar bears. Our guides are highly trained in bear behavior and prioritize the safety and comfort of our guests.

  • How close will we get to the polar bears?
  • The Tundra Buggies allow us to view polar bears at safe distances, often within 10 to 20 feet, depending on bear behavior. That said, bears are curious and will often come up to the Tundra Buggy. All of our Tundra Buggies have grated, steel-mesh platforms for “beneath the feet” viewing, just in case a polar bear or other wildlife chooses to wonder underneath.

Weather and Contingency Plans

  • What happens if the weather is too severe for scheduled activities?
  • If severe weather impacts the schedule, our team will adjust the itinerary as needed to ensure your safety and comfort. Our partners monitor conditions closely and have contingency plans to manage unforeseen circumstances.

Packing and Pre-Departure Information

  • What items should I pack?
  • After booking, we’ll send a pre-departure package with a packing list, a suggested reading list, photography tips, and general information about Churchill. Essentials include warm, layered clothing and sturdy footwear suited to Arctic conditions.

  • What kind of photography equipment is recommended for the tour?
  • For the best shots, we recommend a camera with a zoom lens (200-400mm) for close-ups, a wide-angle lens for landscapes, and a tripod for low-light or Northern Lights shots. For smartphone users, a mini-tripod can improve stability.

Trip Planning and Travel Logistics

  • How do I get to Winnipeg, and what are the recommended travel options?
  • Most guests fly into Winnipeg’s James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, accessible from major Canadian and U.S. cities. We recommend arriving at least a day early, especially for international travelers. We will be happy to assist you with arranging extra hotel nights as well as day tours in Winnipeg.

  • What is the typical daily schedule on a polar bear tour?
  • The daily schedule varies depending on whether you’re staying in town or at the Tundra Buggy Lodge and which specific activities are included in your tour.
For guests staying in town, each day typically begins with breakfast at your hotel, followed by a transfer to the Tundra Buggy Launch and boarding your Tundra Buggy for your full-day excursion. These excursions take you deep into polar bear territory, with opportunities to observe and photograph the bears and other Arctic wildlife. Morning and afternoon snacks, along with a picnic lunch, are served onboard the Tundra Buggy, allowing you to maximize your time in the field. After returning to town in the late afternoon, you’ll have time to relax, enjoy dinner, and perhaps attend an evening presentation or wildlife talk.
For guests staying at the Tundra Buggy Lodge, the experience is fully immersive. You’ll have direct access to polar bear viewing areas from your accommodations, with full-day excursions on the Tundra Buggies. You will awake early for breakfast and be first out on the tundra, taking advantage of the early morning light. Picnic lunches and snacks are served onboard the Tundra Buggy. Just as dusk falls, you head back to the Lodge. Evenings offer delicious dinners and additional time to connect with fellow travelers, listen to wildlife presentations, review photos, and enjoy lodge amenities. Perhaps even enjoy a visit by a polar bear. And, if the conditions are just right, a northern lights show!

  • Are there specific health or vaccination requirements for traveling to Churchill?
  • No specific vaccinations are required for Churchill, though we recommend being up-to-date on standard vaccinations, especially flu shots, due to the cold weather. Consult your physician if you have specific health concerns.

A Note From Peggy

Sometime in the early 1980’s, I watched National Geographic’s documentary Polar Bear Alert! It focused on the small frontier town of Churchill, Manitoba and how it co-exists alongside these magnificent (and dangerous) creatures. You may recall that documentary…remember the children Trick or Treating while polar bears were near the town?

I was fascinated by the opportunity to visit polar bears in their natural habitat. I guess you could say it was the first item on my bucket list – before I knew what a bucket list was!

Several years later, I discovered a family-owned business pioneering tourism in the Churchill area. I jumped at the chance to travel up to the Canadian Arctic to see these “Kings of the Arctic” up-close and personal.

We were not disappointed. Imagine a polar bear, having no fear of me, slowly and curiously, walking up to our Tundra Buggy. Then, standing up on its hind legs, looking at me, almost eye-to-eye.

It was their creation of the original tundra vehicle, the Tundra Buggy, that allowed this incredible experience to happen and ignited adventuring amongst polar bears in Churchill. Today, thirty + years later, this same family-owned and operated business is our partner as we offer programs for guests with an adventurous spirit and specific interests in experiential travel, photography, wildlife, and indigenous culture.

Every experience on our tours is crafted to deepen your connection to polar bears and the Arctic, empowering you with knowledge and practical steps you can take to support conservation efforts. We hope that, when you return home, you’ll be inspired to become an advocate for polar bear conservation.
