Why Churchill Canada?

Why Churchill Canada?

Churchill, Canada is home to the world’s largest land carnivore and perhaps most fascinating species — polar bears. These magnificent predators inhabit cold and snowy landscapes, which depict a real picture of the raw power and the beauty of the Arctic.

Also referred to as the ‘Kings of the Arctic,’ polar bears are known to thrive in one of the most extreme climatic conditions on the planet. At Cregor Adventures, we invite you to embark on a journey where you can experience the awe-inspiring presence of these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

Situated along the western shore of Hudson Bay, Churchill offers visitors the best opportunity to witness polar bears in their natural habitat. During the winter, when the Bay begins to freeze, polar bears venture north – out onto the ice to hunt their favored prey, the ringed seal.

They hunt on ice during the winter, and as the ice melts in late spring and early summer, the bears are forced ashore, waiting for the ice to re-form in the fall. This annual migration involves more than 1,000 polar bears passing through the Churchill region, making it one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles and earning Churchill, Canada the nickname – Polar Bear Capital of the World.

Between October and November, Churchill turns into a haven for nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and researchers from around the globe, all coming together to witness the beauty and grace of these majestic creatures. Come and join us for this unforgettable experience!

Select a Polar Bear Adventure that is Right for You

Our itineraries, ranging from four to seven-days, are designed to offer close and memorable interactions with the Arctic’s most famous inhabitants. Imagine watching polar bears walking just feet from your Tundra Buggy. Or perhaps curious, they pause to rear up on their back legs and look you in the eye, before they continue to slowly meander cross the tundra, heading to the icy shore of the Hudson Bay. Those are memories of a lifetime!

Besides sightseeing polar bears in Canada, you will have the some of the best wildlife spotting chances, including sightings of Arctic foxes, ptarmigans, snowshoe hares, and various bird species.

Expert guides add to the experience by providing information about the region’s unique flora and fauna.

Explore Churchill Beyond Polar Bears

Beyond the thrill of observing polar bears and other wildlife in their natural habitat, Churchill offers an array of unique adventures and cultural experiences.

Embark on a thrilling dog sledding adventure across Churchill’s snowy terrain. Feel the adrenaline as an energetic dog team races through the pristine landscape, giving you an authentic taste of the region’s Arctic traditions.

For a birds-eye view of the incredible region, take to the skies with a one-hour helicopter tour (not included). Soar over the stunning boreal forest, the vast tundra, and the breathtaking shores of Hudson Bay, offering you a panoramic view of this remarkable ecosystem.

When you’re not exploring the great outdoors, dive into the rich history of Churchill, a key player in North America’s fur trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. Visit the Itsanitaq Museum and the Parks Canada Interpretive Center, where you can discover the cultures and traditions of Canada’s indigenous people.

What is a Tundra Buggy?

The Tundra Buggy® is an amazing vehicle which allows guests to view polar bears safely and comfortably in their natural habitat – on the tundra along the shores of the Hudson Bay – traveling along a designated 20-mile network of trails through breathtaking Churchill landscapes, from boreal forest to the arctic tundra to the shore of Hudson Bay. Access to this 20 mile network is by permit only.

  • Our Tundra Buggies stand almost 12 feet tall – designed with passenger safety in mind. A male polar bear can stand on his hind legs, almost 10 feet tall, just below the window bottom!
  • The maximum passenger capacity on a Tundra Buggy is 40 passengers. All of our tours have a maximum number of 22 people. This means that everyone can spread out comfortably and each enjoy window seat.
  • All side windows open so that guests can take photos and view wildlife without any glass obscuring the way. The windows are made of marine glass to prevent fogging up.
  • All of our Tundra Buggies have grated, steel-mesh platforms for “beneath the feet” viewing, just in case a polar bear or other wildlife chooses to wonder underneath
  • For your comfort, there is a “flush” style toilet, like what you may find in an RV, for your comfort.
The “Tundra Buggy” Experience!

Their adventures aren’t just tours – they’re personal, intimate stories of the North, built on decades of close relationships with the local community.

Exclusive Access

Through our trusted partners, Cregor Adventures offers you unmatched access to the Churchill Wildlife Management Area (WMA), adhering to Manitoba Sustainable Development and Parks Canada standards. The WMA is a large tract of land designated to protect the fragile Hudson Bay coastline and tundra eco-system. The area provides habitat for polar bears, caribou and is a prime nesting area for many of the 200-species of birds that migrate to the Churchill area in summer.

Access to this area is heavily restricted. VERY few companies hold a permit for access to the full network of roads designated for tundra vehicle use. Actually, there are only 20 permits allotted and our partner holds 12 – more than half. This allows us full access. What does full access mean? Access to a network of 20 miles of established trails deep into prime polar bear viewing areas, making your polar bear tour unparalleled.

With Cregor Adventures and our partners, experience the full, breathtaking journey into the heart of polar bear country – where real encounters await!

Small Groups

An essential element of a wildlife adventure is small group size – small group sizes offer a more meaningful and immersive experience.

When it comes to our Polar Bears of Churchill adventures, our small groups are limited to 20 – 22 guests, even though our Tundra Buggies are designed for 40 passengers. You can be assured that you will have a window seat and plenty of room to spread out for your comfort and great visibility.

Commitment to Conservation and Social Responsibility

At Cregor Adventures, we pride ourselves on taking guests to breathtaking destinations where they can immerse themselves in the unique history, culture, and wildlife of regions few people ever get to experience. But we believe our responsibility goes beyond simply guiding travelers through these fragile ecosystems.

We are committed to sustainable travel and to inspiring a global community to care deeply about the places we visit and the people and wildlife that call them home. Through our exclusive collaboration with Polar Bears International, we provide unique insights from polar bear experts, live global webcasts from Tundra Buggy One, and visits to the PBI House to inspire action on Arctic conservation. Our guests’ stories highlight the unforgettable experiences, personalized service, and meaningful connections that make our journeys so special. From bucket-list adventures to family memories that last a lifetime, here’s what our travelers have to say.

Dear Frank, I want to THANK YOU very much for a super super tour. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We had 18 and were the first tour on the Buggy. It was interesting and I loved every minute of it.I wonder if you would be able to convey, for me, my deepest and heartfelt thanks to the following: Emma – Ralph – Toby and especially our super Guide Neil Mundy (I think that is his surname – not sure though!). They were so lovely and made me (and I am sure Russell) feel so at home with their love and support. If you could do this for me please so that the above individuals will read this message – I would be ever so grateful. Thank you once again for this wonderful opportunity to see these beautiful creatures – we do have an Awesome God!

The trip was great! I believe the size of the group made all of the difference – we were a group of 12. It was wonderful, we saw all of the animals that we could possibly see! Our guide was great! The accommodations were great! Very comfortable. I did pay the single supplement and appreciated having the extra bunk for space so that I could spread out my stuff. I appreciated the meals that you provided during our time in Churchill and accommodations in the hotels in Winnipeg. Our guide was absolutely wonderful! He was friendly and answered all questions! I can’t give him enough praise. He spent plenty of time with the animals that we encountered so that we could get plenty of pictures. Fantastic guide! I had seen information about Churchill several years ago on the TV news. I had always had that trip in the back of my mind. I went online and looked at some of the options to do this trip. I told a friend that I wanted to do this but the cost was prohibitive. He looked it up and found Cregor Adventures that was less than some of the others. I inquired, found out that there was availability and I decided then and there that I wanted to do it. I have already recommended this trip to friends and relatives. The only thing that concerns me is that the group I was in was only 12. I saw other Tundra Buggies that were full. I would not like this. With a small group, it was easier to get going in the morning, we were a cooperative group, there were six Australians, four British, one Norwegian, and me. It was a very nice composition of nice people. We had plenty of room to move around on the Tundra Buggy. The bus seats worked well in the Tundra Buggy. Thank you very much!

Hi Peggy, We had a really great trip and enjoyed our experience immensely. The Polar Bears were amazing (including some very close encounters) and we got to see a lot of other wildlife as well (Arctic Hares, Arctic Fox, Caribou and Snowy Owls). Our driver/guide (Glenn Hopfner) on the Tundra Buggy was fantastic and full of great information about the region and animals. It is definitely a trip we would (and already have) recommended to our friends. Many thanks for your help in organizing the trip for us.

Those who know me well, know that I have long been fascinated with the Polar Bear. Every Christmas season, my friends and family receive Holiday cards with a Polar Bear or Bears as the design — it’s become my signature. The walls of my home contain numerous photos of the bears, as well as quite a few stuffed animals. I became aware of Churchill many years ago — I was probably a teenager — when I saw a National Geographic special about the town, the first Tundra Buggies and professional photographers filming the bears. The bears wait patiently in Churchill for the ice to form on the bay so that they can go out and hunt seals. I’ve wanted to visit ever since! After a couple of trying years, I decided that this year was THE year and booked a tour through Cregor Adventures (run by a lovely lady named Peggy) ... I’ve been all over this country, on all sorts of vacations, but this was simply the BEST trip ever!

Read about the trip but Peggy Cregor was soooo helpful...We travel a lot, but this was our #1 in enjoyment and interest. (Our guide) Brad was so polite, knowledgeable and helpful – I think we’ll adopt him! Would love to meet Peggy – she is so helpful What did you enjoy most about this trip? 1. Seeing Polar Bears; 2. Helicopter trip; 3. Dogsled ride; 4. Seeing bears airlifted out. What did you enjoy least about this trip? Having to come home!

We felt (our guide) went above and beyond of what was needed. She made a point to talk with each person daily, also ask if there was anything more she could do…We did not have a concern or worry at all (our guides) had almost all the answers. We always felt safe and content like family. Thank you very much Peggy!

We both loved the bears. I loved the landscape; we arrived on a warm day and saw the tundra willows and grasses in their fall colors. The next day a blizzard blew in and the boreal forest and ponds were covered with snow. We also loved John Stetson, the dog-sled guide. He is smart, charming and funny. We were very pleased with the Lazy Bear Lodge. Although it was not by any means fancy, it was absolutely spotless...The log cabin style gave us a “sense of place.” The atmosphere was frontier town with a lot of homey charm.

So pleased with professionalism...it seemed Wade and I were the only ones in our group who had so much information. It made it so easy for us! Congrats!

If it weren’t for Peggy, we wouldn’t have been in Costa Rica on such a great vacation. She found a tour and airline tickets (non-stop)! Why would you consider traveling with Cregor Adventures again? Because of all the personal help we received, and Peggy had so much first-hand experience. What did you enjoy most about this trip? The animals in the rainforests, the hot springs, the white-water rafting, the “Ticos”…Fabian [our guide] was so sincere and helpful. He really tried to please everyone (i.e. finding supplementary activities). He also knew so much about the flora and fauna and checked his own guidebook for additional information or to verify what he already know. He woke early for those of us who wanted to go on early morning nature walks. I don’t want to forget to mention that Fabian had an excellent sense of humor. Carlos was our driver. He was terrific! Not only was he an expert driver, but he was great at spotting wildlife. Alvaro took us white-water rafting. He was delightful and told many stories. The “Ticos” are exceptionally warm and friendly.

Dear Peggy, Thank you so much for securing us a room at the Fort Garry Hotel. It as a magic place to stay! Staff, absolutely amazing and knowledgeable. Peggy was brilliant! The environment, the knowledge of guides and drivers, congenial people, makes tight organization. Dog sled ride. What can you say? People only dream about this. The night tour was absolutely amazing, thanks for letting us know about it! We were one of few who knew about this tour, and the night was brilliant. The friends and acquaintances in New Zealand find it hard to imagine what this environment is like. Until you go, and experience it for yourself, it is hard to describe. Thank you so much for the opportunity.

We got home tonight from our tundra buggy polar tour you booked for us and it was really wonderful. Everything went smoothly and we saw at least a dozen bears. We did the helicopter ride and just really enjoyed our trip... Peggy was friendly and informative and follow through and organization great! Thanks so much for all your help making this trip possible.... I think I am hooked! I’ve joined PBI (Polar Bears International) and am excited to help their group.

My trip was planned literally on the spur of the moment and Peggy could not have been more helpful. She was wonderful, thanks Peggy. I’ve traveled the world and this trip stands out more than all the others...I enjoyed everything, just everything and everybody...I feel so fortunate to have had such a wonderful adventure that I feel guilty telling everyone how much fun I had because they missed out BIG TIME! The Polar Bears were magical and totally funny. The northern lights were magnificent!! The Tundra Buggy accommodations were wonderful. I couldn’t have imagined the guides to have been as wonderful as they all were. “Why would you consider traveling with Cregor Adventures again?” I really enjoyed the down to earth approach to my Polar Bear/Northern Lights adventure. I am an adventurous nature/animal lover and so is my husband and Cregor Adventures delivered an adventure I cannot stop thinking about.

A Note From Peggy

Sometime in the early 1980’s, I watched National Geographic’s documentary Polar Bear Alert! It focused on the small frontier town of Churchill, Manitoba and how it co-exists alongside these magnificent (and dangerous) creatures. You may recall that documentary…remember the children Trick or Treating while polar bears were near the town?

I was fascinated by the opportunity to visit polar bears in their natural habitat. I guess you could say it was the first item on my bucket list – before I knew what a bucket list was!

Several years later, I discovered a family-owned business pioneering tourism in the Churchill area. I jumped at the chance to travel up to the Canadian Arctic to see these “Kings of the Arctic” up-close and personal.

We were not disappointed. Imagine a polar bear, having no fear of me, slowly and curiously, walking up to our Tundra Buggy. Then, standing up on its hind legs, looking at me, almost eye-to-eye.

It was their creation of the original tundra vehicle, the Tundra Buggy, that allowed this incredible experience to happen and ignited adventuring amongst polar bears in Churchill. Today, thirty + years later, this same family-owned and operated business is our partner as we offer programs for guests with an adventurous spirit and specific interests in experiential travel, photography, wildlife, and indigenous culture.

Every experience on our tours is crafted to deepen your connection to polar bears and the Arctic, empowering you with knowledge and practical steps you can take to support conservation efforts. We hope that, when you return home, you’ll be inspired to become an advocate for polar bear conservation.
