Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best time of year to visit the Amazon Rainforest?

The Amazon Rainforest is a year-round destination, with each season offering unique highlights. The “high-water” season (December to May) is ideal for exploring flooded forests by canoe and spotting aquatic wildlife, while the “low-water” season (June to November) provides easier access to jungle trails and clay licks. Both seasons are incredible, and we’ll help you choose the perfect time based on your interests.

How do I decide between an Amazon riverboat cruise and staying at an ecolodge?

Both experiences are unforgettable, but they offer different perspectives. A riverboat cruise lets you explore multiple areas and waterways while enjoying the comfort of a mobile base. An ecolodge immerses you in the heart of the jungle, allowing for more in-depth exploration of a single region. We’ll work with you to decide which option best suits your travel style and interests—or you can combine both for the ultimate Amazon experience.

What is the difference between visiting the Amazon in Brazil, Peru, or Ecuador?

Each region offers something unique. Brazil’s Amazon features the famous “Meeting of the Waters” and vast river systems. Peru’s Amazon is known for its incredible biodiversity and remote wildlife hotspots like the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. Ecuador’s Amazon offers accessible yet pristine areas and rich cultural encounters with local communities. We’ll guide you to the best destination based on your preferences.

What types of wildlife can I expect to see on an Amazon Rainforest tour?

The Amazon is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Depending on your itinerary, you may spot playful monkeys, pink freshwater dolphins, macaws, toucans, sloths, caimans, and even jaguars or giant river otters if you’re lucky. Our expert naturalist guides will help you uncover the secrets of this vibrant ecosystem.

How can I ensure my trip to the Amazon is sustainable and supports conservation efforts?

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our tours support eco-friendly lodges and riverboats that prioritize conservation, work with local communities, and minimize environmental impact. By traveling with Cregor Adventures, you’re contributing to the preservation of this vital ecosystem while enjoying an authentic and meaningful experience.

What activities are included in an Amazon Rainforest tour?

Activities vary depending on your itinerary but often include guided nature walks, wildlife spotting, birdwatching, canoeing through flooded forests, visiting local communities, night safaris, and even piranha fishing. Whether on land or water, every activity is designed to connect you with the rainforest’s beauty and diversity.

How many days should I plan to spend in the Amazon to fully experience it?

We recommend a minimum of four days to truly immerse yourself in the Amazon, but longer stays—such as seven or eight days—allow for deeper exploration and more varied experiences. We’ll work with you to craft an itinerary that fits your schedule and ensures you don’t miss any highlights.

Are the tours suitable for families with children or multi-generational groups?

Absolutely! Our tours are designed to be family-friendly and accessible for travelers of all ages. Activities are tailored to your group’s interests and abilities, making it a perfect adventure for families or multi-generational travelers looking to bond and create lifelong memories.

What level of physical fitness is required for an Amazon Rainforest tour?

Our tours are flexible and can accommodate a variety of fitness levels. Activities like jungle walks and canoe trips can be adjusted to suit your comfort, and there’s always the option to relax onboard or at the lodge if you prefer. Let us know your needs, and we’ll tailor the experience accordingly.

Are there opportunities to interact with local Amazonian communities?

Yes, visiting local communities is often a highlight of our tours. You’ll have the chance to learn about traditional ways of life, meet artisans, and gain insight into the unique relationship between these communities and the rainforest. These experiences are authentic and respectful, offering meaningful cultural connections.

What kind of accommodations can I expect on a riverboat cruise versus an ecolodge?

Riverboats offer comfortable, air-conditioned cabins, often with panoramic windows, and amenities like observation decks and dining areas. Ecolodges provide a closer connection to nature, with well-appointed yet sustainable accommodations featuring open-air designs, private bathrooms, and rainforest views. Both options blend comfort with authenticity.

What should I pack for an Amazon Rainforest tour?

We’ll provide a detailed packing list, but essentials include lightweight, breathable clothing, sturdy walking shoes, insect repellent, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, binoculars, and a camera. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle and rain gear to stay comfortable in the rainforest’s ever-changing conditions.

Are the riverboats and lodges air-conditioned or equipped with other modern comforts?

Yes, most riverboats and some lodges offer air conditioning in sleeping areas for your comfort. While lodges are more rustic, they still provide modern amenities like private bathrooms, mosquito netting, and delicious meals made with fresh, local ingredients.

How safe is it to travel to the Amazon, and are there any health precautions I should take?

Your safety is our top priority. Our tours are led by experienced guides, and we work with trusted operators who adhere to high safety standards. We recommend consulting your doctor about vaccinations and medications such as malaria prophylaxis before your trip. We’ll provide you with all necessary health and safety information during the planning process.

What’s included in the cost of an Amazon Rainforest tour—meals, transportation, guides, etc.?

Our tours are all-inclusive, covering accommodations, guided excursions, meals, and in most cases, airport transfers. Flights to and from the Amazon are typically not included, but we’re happy to assist with booking. We’ll provide a clear breakdown of what’s included so you know exactly what to expect.

Can I customize my Amazon Rainforest tour to match my specific interests?

Absolutely! Customization is at the heart of what we do. Whether you’re interested in birdwatching, photography, or cultural experiences, we’ll work with you to design an itinerary that aligns perfectly with your passions and travel style.

Are there specific tours or itineraries for birdwatchers, photographers, or nature enthusiasts?

What Our Guests Are Saying

There’s no better way to understand the heart of Cregor Adventures than through the words of those who’ve traveled with us. Our guests’ stories highlight the unforgettable experiences, personalized service, and meaningful connections that make our journeys so special. From bucket-list adventures to family memories that last a lifetime, here’s what our travelers have to say.

Peggy and Frank, The trip was wonderful. The weather was great, only heavy rain the last morning in the Amazon Basin, and the hotels and guides were perfect. Machu Picchu was amazing. We could not have enjoyed it more. Thank you for your help and planning. We all had a fantastic time and would be happy to recommend the trip to others. Would like to go back to visit the southwest and see the Lake islands and the Nasca signs. Thanks again for your coordination and assistance. Have a great 2012.

Hi Frank, The trip was great! I have to admit that I’d been steeling myself to be pretty physically uncomfortable being in the rainforest that close to the equator and all, but we really lucked out. The first three days were close to 100 degrees and crazy humid, which was what I was expecting, but what I didn’t expect was that the air conditioning in our cabins was FANTASTIC. (We were in China a couple of years ago and stayed in a few decent hotels that had air conditioning that was a joke, and frankly that was what I was expecting. I’m very pleased to say that the Tucano greatly exceeded my expectations in that regard!) Everything was crazy lush—just like you see in the movies—with thick walls of trees on each side of the river. We saw lots of monkeys, sloths and gorgeous birds. And we fished for piranha, and then ate them the next day–they were quite tasty! Actually the food was very good all week. The other thing that exceeded both our expectations: all the activities. With three “canoe” trips exploring the waterways and islands for animals and birds plus the morning forest walks nearly every day, we definitely got our money’s worth and made the most of being in Amazonas! So anyway, it was a fantastic adventure (and a couple of friends at work have asked for a link to your website)! If you like, once we sort through our pictures I’ll share a few of the good ones with you. Thanks again for all your pre-trip help!

From the initial contact I made with Cregor Adventures, all the way to the day of my travel, customer service was excellent. All my questions were answered quickly and all arrangements were modified to my needs. What did you like most about the trip? The hikes into the jungle, the relaxing pace of the trip; the complete absence of phones, computers, TV’s, the educational aspects of the trip, etc. Couldn’t ask for a better set of guides. I like the emphasis they placed on ecological preservation.

A Note From Peggy

The genesis of Cregor Adventures began one winter night in 1994 with a spark of curiosity and concern. After reading an article about the devastating destruction of the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil, I felt a deep urgency. I turned to my family and announced, “We have to visit the Amazon and learn about its incredible natural history before it’s lost forever.” That decision wasn’t just the start of a family trip—it was the beginning of a lifelong love for the Amazon and a profound understanding of how travel, particularly eco-tourism, can be one of the most powerful tools for preserving our planet’s fragile ecosystems and cultures.

Our first journey to the Amazon was more than an adventure; it was an awakening. We learned to appreciate the intricate balance of life in the rainforest and the role we can play in protecting it. But beyond its vital importance to the health of the planet, the Amazon also offered something simpler and equally profound: a magical escape into nature—a holiday full of awe and wonder for people of all ages.

Some of our most cherished memories are tied to the sensory symphony of the Amazon. Waking just before sunrise, we’d hear the unmistakable calls of howler monkeys, a sound Peggy fondly describes as resembling espresso machines. As the rainforest slowly came to life, birds greeted the day with their melodic songs, creating an unforgettable “good morning” chorus. In jungle lodges, we climbed towers and walked suspended bridges high in the canopy—a breathtaking experience, gazing out over the endless green and realizing we were looking down on one of the world’s most vibrant ecosystems.

On riverboat cruises, early morning “panga” rides became a family favorite. Gliding through serene waterways, we’d soak in the beauty of the rainforest as it awoke, returning to the boat for breakfasts filled with tropical fruits, fresh breads, and familiar favorites. Evening rides were just as magical, as we watched sunsets unique to the Amazon and later searched for the mysterious red eyes of caimans shimmering in the dark.

Perhaps the most humbling part of the journey was the sheer enormity of the rainforest and its staggering biodiversity. From islands harboring species that never leave their secluded homes to the surprises waiting around every river bend, the Amazon is a place that defies imagination. Each trip deepened our appreciation for its wonders and strengthened our belief in the need to protect this extraordinary place.

The Amazon is truly unlike any other destination in the world—a place of adventure, connection, and discovery. It has captured our hearts, and it’s our joy to share this incredible region with others. I warmly invite you to experience it as we have and create your own unforgettable memories in this remarkable corner of the planet.
